Van’s Original Gluten Free Waffles Recalled Due To Presence Of Wheat

On the 3rd of July, 2023, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) published Van’s International Foods’ recall of Van’s Gluten Free Original Waffles due to a packaging error and potential allergen danger. The Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois-based company, Van’s International Foods, revealed that some of their Van’s Original Waffles which are labeled as “gluten free”, may contain wheat in the product.

The United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) included in the urgent recall announcement that it was initiated after “…it was discovered that wheat-containing products were distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of wheat. Subsequent investigation indicates that the problem was caused by the inclusion of a limited number of cartons for Van’s Gluten Free Original Waffles with a pallet of cartons intended for wheat containing products. Immediate steps were taken to prevent recurrence.”

While Van’s Original Gluten Free Waffles can still be seen advertised through their Instagram post made in May, 2023 with the statement “A friendly reminder in recognition of #CeliacAwarenessMonth- waffles are for everyone…Browse our excellent selection of deliciously wholesome gluten-free and non-gluten-free options,” individuals should be aware of the company’s now voluntary recall of their Original Gluten Free Waffles. Van’s International Foods shared that the only products currently affected in the recall are labeled with a Best By Date of 1/19/2024 and a Lot Code of #UW40193L. No other Van products have been recalled as of July 4th, 2023.

To avoid a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, individuals with wheat sensitivities or allergies should strictly avoid consumption of Van’s International Foods’ Original Gluten Free Waffles; discarding of the product or returning to the location of purchase for a full refund, if in possession of the recalled waffles.

As the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and Van’s International Foods work together to investigate the situation, no illnesses or deaths have yet been reported as being related to the recall.
