Norovirus Outbreak Strikes UK Cruise Ship

An outbreak of norovirus has struck over 250 passengers on a cruise ship in the United Kingdom.  The outbreak was identified after several passengers reported symptoms consistent with norovirus infection.

Norovirus, often dubbed the “stomach flu,” is a highly contagious virus known for causing acute gastroenteritis in individuals of all ages worldwide.  The pathogen is especially contagious and can be transmitted through multiple routes, including person to person contact, on contaminated surfaces, in contaminated food and water, and from aerosolized particles.  Outbreaks can occur quickly in settings where people are in close proximity such as schools, hospitals, nursing homes, restaurants, and cruise ships.

The MS Ventura, operated by P&O Cruises, departed Southampton, England on May 11 for a two week cruise to Spain’s Canary Islands.  At some point, multiple guests began to show symptoms of severe gastrointestinal distress.  Currently over 150 of the passengers have been isolated to prevent further spread.

The ship’s crew undertook thorough cleaning and disinfection of common areas, cabins, and high-touch surfaces to eradicate any traces of the virus. Dining services were adjusted to reduce the risk of contamination, including changes to food handling practices and service protocols to minimize contact.

Local health officials will be on hand when the ship returns to port this coming Saturday.  The cruise line will ensure that healthy passengers and those who are sick will remain separated after the ship docks and guests begin to disembark

The MS Ventura is scheduled to leave port the same day for a new, week-long cruise.  Passengers for that sailing have been asked to arrive later than their scheduled check in time so the ship can be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

Passengers are typically provided with detailed instructions on how to minimize their risk of contracting norovirus.  These included frequent hand washing with soap and water, especially after using the restroom and before eating, and the use of hand sanitizers. It is also advised to avoid close contact with others if feeling unwell and to report any symptoms to the ship’s medical staff immediately.

Commenting on this story, one national food safety attorney said, “By following health advisories and maintaining high standards of hygiene, the risk of further spread can be minimized. This incident demonstrates the importance of stringent health protocols and prompt action in managing outbreaks of infectious diseases on cruise ships and in other confined environments.”
