Baker Farms, based in Norman Park, Georgia, has issued a voluntary recall for a specific lot of their Baker Farms Curly Mustard greens due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria) remains ongoing. Listeria is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

The recall was initiated after testing by the Texas Department of State Health Services uncovered the presence of Listeria.

Distribution

The affected product was sent to distribution centers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas.

Product Details

  • Brand – Baker Farms
  • Product – Curly Mustard
  • Size – 16 oz
  • Packaging – Clear plastic bags
  • UPC Code – 8 13098 02018 4
  • Lot Code – bak144-6806

The affected product should be disposed of immediately or returned to point of purchase for a refund.

Consumers should thoroughly sanitize any surface or utensils that have come into contact with the recalled product.

Consumers with additional questions or concerns can contact Baker Farms at 844-761-2244 from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm EST.

Health Risks

There have been no reported cases of illness or injuries in connection with the consumption of the recalled product.

Listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, is particularly dangerous for certain vulnerable populations. Pregnant individuals, people aged 65 or older, and those with weakened immune systems are at highest risk. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms. In pregnant individuals, listeriosis can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening infections in newborns.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of Listeriosis should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

Commenting on this story, one national Listeria lawyer said, “Listeria is dangerous to many members of our population but especially dangerous to pregnant women. I strongly advise returning this product to the store and also making sure anything that it has touched is thoroughly cleaned.”
