Riverside Natural Foods Inc., based in Chicago, Illinois, has issued a voluntary recall of its MadeGood granola bars due to potential contamination with pieces of metal. Food contaminated with foreign objects has the potential to cause severe harm, including choking, injury, illness, damage to teeth, or even death.

Background

The recall notice did not clarify how the potential presence of metal pieces in the recalled products was discovered.

The company did say it has thoroughly examined the manufacturing site where the recalled products were produced and has identified the cause of the problem. Riverside said that the issue has been resolved and new procedures have been implemented, and tested to prevent similar issues in the future.

Distribution

The recalled products were distributed throughout Canada, the United States, and in other international markets.

Product Details

  • All impacted products were manufactured and distributed between January 2024 and November 2024.
  • Any product with a “Z” after the Best by Date is excluded from the recall.

Consumer Action

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected products even if they look or smell safe to eat or if there are no visible signs of contamination by foreign objects.

Anyone in possession of the recalled products is requested to not sell, serve, or distribute them.

Consumers can return the impacted products to the point of purchase for a refund or discard them.

Consumers with additional questions or concerns can contact the MadeGood Consumer Hotline at 855-215-5696 from 8 am to 5 pm EST.

Health Risks

No illnesses or injuries in connection with the recalled product have been reported. Any consumer who has been exposed to the affected product, and is experiencing sickness or injury, should contact their medical provider immediately.

Food contaminated with metal has the potential to cause severe harm, including choking, injury, illness, damage to teeth, gums, tongue, throat, mouth, stomach, and intestines or even death in most people. Infants, the elderly, and recent surgery patients could also be at extreme risk of serious injury.

Commenting on this article, one national food poisoning lawyer said, “Because granola bars are often enjoyed by people of all ages, I strongly encourage any consumer in possession of the recalled products to stop eating them and return them to the store right away.”
