Walker’s Wine Juice LLC Recalls Product Due to Possible Health Risk

In April 2025, Walker’s Wine Juice LLC, a company based in Forestville, New York, issued a voluntary recall of its pumpkin juice due to potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium responsible for botulism—a rare but potentially fatal illness.

Background on Walker’s Wine Juice LLC

Walker’s Wine Juice LLC specializes in producing and distributing various fruit juices, primarily for winemaking purposes. Their products cater to both amateur home winemakers and commercial wineries. The company’s pumpkin juice was among the offerings distributed to a limited number of commercial wineries across multiple states.

Details of the Recall

On April 1, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Walker’s Wine Juice LLC was recalling its pumpkin juice due to concerns over potential botulism contamination. The recall encompassed all lots of the following product sizes:

·        2.5-gallon bag-in-box labeled “pumpkin”

·        5-gallon hot pack labeled “pumpkin”

·        30-, 60-, and 275-gallon bulk containers tagged “pumpkin”

These products were distributed through Walker’s Wine Juice’s retail store in New York and supplied directly to commercial wineries in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Cause of the Contamination

The potential contamination was identified following an inspection by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. Inspectors discovered that the pumpkin juice’s pH levels were too high to be processed safely under Walker’s “hot fill” schedule. This indicated that the juice had not undergone an adequate “kill step” to eliminate microbiological hazards, including Clostridium botulinum.

Understanding Botulism

Botulism is a severe form of food poisoning caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. These toxins attack the body’s nerves and can lead to symptoms such as:

·        General weakness

·        Dizziness

·        Double vision

·        Difficulty speaking or swallowing

·        Breathing difficulties

·        Muscle weakness

·        Abdominal distension

·        Constipation

In severe cases, botulism can result in paralysis or death if not promptly treated. Individuals experiencing any of these symptoms are urged to seek immediate medical attention.

Company Response and Consumer Guidance

As of the recall announcement, no illnesses had been reported. Walker’s Wine Juice LLC advised consumers and commercial entities in possession of the recalled pumpkin juice to contact the company for guidance on proper disposal and to discuss potential reimbursement. Consumers with questions were directed to reach out to Matthew Walker at 716-679-1292 x 1016.

Implications for Food Safety

According to the national food poisoning lawyer, Tony Coveny, this recall underscores the critical importance of stringent quality control measures in food and beverage production. Ensuring that products undergo appropriate processing steps to eliminate potential pathogens is vital to prevent foodborne illnesses. Regulatory oversight, such as inspections by state departments of agriculture, plays a key role in identifying and mitigating risks associated with food production.
