In April 2025, Wells Enterprises, a prominent U.S. ice cream manufacturer based in Le Mars, Iowa, initiated a voluntary nationwide recall of over 16,000 gallons of ice cream and frozen yogurt due to potential plastic contamination. This recall, announced on April 25, 2025, encompasses 22 different products across several brands, including Blue Bunny, Halo Top, Bomb Pop, Blue Ribbon Classics, and The Cheesecake Factory at Home.

Scope of the Recall

The recall specifically targets 3-gallon tubs of ice cream and frozen yogurt with “Best If Used By” dates ranging from March to October 2026. These products were distributed to 103 locations across the United States, including restaurants, cafeterias, healthcare facilities, and schools, through major suppliers such as Gordon Food Service, US Foods, Sysco Corporation, and Ben E. Keith Foods.

Among the affected ice cream products, the Vanilla Frozen Yogurt flavor was the most impacted, with over 5,280 tubs recalled. Other flavors include Rocky Road, Mocha Almond Fudge, Peanut Butter N’ Fudge, Country Rich Vanilla, and Cotton Candy.

Health Risks and FDA Classification

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified this recall as a Class II event. This classification indicates that the use of or exposure to the recalled products may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, but the probability of serious adverse health effects is remote.

The potential health risks associated with consuming products contaminated with hard plastic fragments include mouth injuries, dental issues, and choking hazards. As of May 18, 2025, no illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.

Consumer Guidance

Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products are advised not to consume them. Instead, they should return the products to the place of purchase for a refund or dispose of them responsibly. The FDA and Wells Enterprises have provided a full list of the affected products, including UPC codes and lot numbers, to assist consumers in identifying the recalled items.

Company Response and Preventive Measures

Wells Enterprises has not publicly disclosed the specific source of the plastic contamination. However, the company has taken proactive steps to address the issue by initiating the recall and notifying all affected distribution centers. The company is working closely with the FDA to investigate the root cause of the contamination and implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.

Final Note

This recall highlights the importance of stringent quality control measures in the food manufacturing industry. While no injuries have been reported, the potential risks associated with plastic contamination necessitate prompt action to protect consumer health. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed about product recalls and to follow the guidance provided by manufacturers and regulatory agencies to ensure food safety.
