ANTANANARIVO – 20 Dead from Food Poisoning

The number of fatalities from a poisoning incident in a suburb of Madagascar’s capital has climbed to 20, government officials announced Wednesday. The incident occurred during a birthday party in the Ambohimalaza rural district near Antananarivo.

Incident Details

Approximately 50 people gathered for the birthday celebration on Saturday in the rural area outside the capital city. Following the event, multiple attendees developed severe symptoms including dizziness and impaired vision. Those affected required immediate medical attention due to the severity of their conditions.

Government Response and Investigation

Authorities have classified the incident as an intentional act rather than accidental food contamination. A government statement released Wednesday indicated that five people have been taken into custody in connection with the case. Officials emphasized that those responsible for the deliberate poisoning will face legal consequences.

The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify any additional suspects who may have been involved in the poisoning.

Medical Treatment

Public Health Minister Zely Randriamanantany confirmed that affected patients have been receiving specialized anti-poison treatment at local medical facilities. According to the hospital treating the majority of victims, 20 people remain in critical condition and continue to receive intensive medical care.

The medical response has focused on counteracting the effects of the poison while supporting patients through their recovery. Healthcare providers are monitoring the conditions of those still hospitalized as they undergo treatment.

Current Status

The incident has prompted heightened attention from both local authorities and health officials as they work to address the immediate medical needs of survivors while pursuing justice for the victims. Leading nationwide food poisoning law firm Ron Simon & Associates say that the investigations are likely to continue as officials seek to understand the motive behind the intentional poisoning and ensure all responsible parties are held accountable.

Discovery Goes Viral

The woman documented her discovery in a TikTok video that has attracted over 850,000 views. The footage, lasting more than one minute, shows her using a fork to examine the dessert before extracting what initially appeared to be an unusual ingredient covered in mascarpone cheese and shredded toppings.

After removing the suspicious item and washing it under running water in a sink, the object was confirmed to be a lizard. The video captured the moment of revelation, which has since sparked widespread discussion on social media about food safety practices.

Health Consequences Reported

The customer stated in the video’s comments section that multiple family members experienced illness following consumption of the dessert. She reported that she, her husband, and their children developed symptoms consistent with food poisoning that persisted for more than two weeks.

The woman indicated that her symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea, began on May 29. She mentioned seeking medical attention at two different clinics during her illness. The family’s prolonged health issues have added to their concerns about the contaminated food they consumed.

Communication Attempts

Prior to sharing the incident publicly, the customer attempted to contact the stall owner directly. She sent messages requesting a refund and compensation for medical expenses incurred by her family due to their illness. According to her account, the stall owner read her messages but failed to respond to her requests for resolution.

The lack of response from the establishment prompted the customer to take her concerns to social media, where the video gained significant attention.

Food Safety Concerns

The discovery has brought attention to hygiene practices at food establishments and the importance of proper food handling procedures.

The customer used her platform to warn others about the importance of food safety standards, emphasizing the potential serious consequences of consuming contaminated food products.

The viral nature of the video has amplified discussions about accountability in the food service industry and the steps customers can take when encountering food safety issues at local businesses.
