  • Snyder’s-Lance, Inc. initiated a voluntary recall of certain Diamond of California Macadamia Nuts packages on Tuesday. The company initiated the recall due to potential Salmonella contamination. Snyder’s-Lance distributed the recalled product to retail stores nationwide.

Tests Reveal Salmonella in Packages of Macadamia Nuts

The recall results from positive Salmonella test results on a 4 oz. package of Diamond of California Chopped Macadamia Nuts. A FDA-contracted laboratory conducted the tests that revealed the presence of the dangerous organism. According to the company, “Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”

As a result of the test, Synder’s-Lance announced the recall of 4 oz. packages of Diamond of California Chopped Macadamia Nuts and 2.25 oz. Diamond of California Macadamia Halves and Pieces. The company recall covers only certain lot numbers of the nuts with specific expiration dates:

To locate the production code on the package, consumers should look on the front of the package. The company asks consumers who purchased any affected products to contact Consumer Affairs for a full refund.

“We apologize to our retail customers and consumers and sincerely regret any inconvenience. We are working and cooperating fully with the U. S. Food & Drug Administration on this voluntary recall,” the company stated in the recall release posted to the FDA website on Tuesday.
