AB World Foods Pty Limited is recalling Al’Fez branded tahini in New Zealand due to potential Salmonella contamination. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections, especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Background
The affected tahini, manufactured in Poland and imported from Australia, was sold in selected Foodstuff South Island stores throughout the South Island of New Zealand. The affected product is no longer available for sale.
New Zealand’s food safety system places responsibility on importers for ensuring the safety of imported food products. According to a release on New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries website, high-risk foods like tahini require food-safety clearance at the border, which may involve official certificates, documentation, or sampling and testing upon arrival.
New Zealand Food Safety will collaborate with the importer and manufacturer to investigate the contamination source and prevent future occurrences.

Health Risks

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without specific treatment, the infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Commenting on this story, one national food safety attorney said, “Today’s food supply chains are truly global and this incident is a prime example of the challenges in maintaining food safety across international borders. This is why it’s especially important to have strong recall systems and clear public communication to protect consumer health.”
