La compañía con sede en Iowa Sprouts Unlimited Inc. emitió un retiro de sus paquetes de 4 onzas de brotes de trébol el 27 de diciembre de 2019. El retiro fue anunciado por la Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos (FDA) después de que la compañía fue notificada por el Departamento de Inspecciones y Apelaciones de Iowa de un grupo de enfermedades de E. coli O103 vinculadas a los brotes de trébol distribuidos por Sprouts Unlimited Inc. Por el momento, el número de afectados no se ha notificado al público en general, pero los funcionarios del departamento de salud han emitido una advertencia a todos los consumidores para evitar consumir los productos contaminados hasta que se conozcan más.

Funcionarios del Departamento de Salud han declarado que la fuente de la contaminación aún no ha sido determinada, pero continuarán haciendo más pruebas e investigando la fuente de la contaminación. Según Sprouts Unlimited Inc., los productos de brotes potencialmente contaminados se distribuyeron a las tiendas Hy Vee Food, Fareway Food Stores y los restaurantes de Jimmy John en Iowa. Las tiendas minoristas vendieron los brotes en recipientes de pintas con una etiqueta azul sprouts Unlimited Inc. en la tapa. El UPC 7 32684 00013 6 se puede encontrar en la parte inferior derecha de la etiqueta.

Los vegetales de hojas verdes a veces puede ser más peligrosas que valen la pena como se ha visto en anteriores brotes, como el brote reciente  multi-estatal de E. coli O157: H7 vinculado a la lechuga romana que afectó a 138 personas en 25 estados. Otro ejemplo es el brote de cyclospora que pazo en los principios del verano y reportó 241 enfermedades en 11 estados.

Los abogados de intoxicación alimentaria de Ron Simon & Associates aconsejan a los consumidores que sienten síntomas de E. coli como dolor abdominal, náuseas, vómitos y diarrea con sangre que visiten a un proveedor de atención médica y soliciten un cultivo de heces. Las infecciones por E. coli se diagnostican normalmente mediante pruebas de laboratorio de muestras de heces. Identificar la cepa específica de E. coli involucrada es muy importante para fines de salud pública, y es fundamental para detectar brotes. Los síntomas pueden variar de persona a persona y aunque algunas personas pueden recuperarse en una semana sin complicaciones, otras pueden desarrollar una forma de insuficiencia renal llamada Síndrome Hemolítico-Urémico (HUS). El HUS puede provocar graves daños renales e incluso podría causar muerte.
