Country Eggs LLC Recalls Large Brown Cage Free Sunshine Yolks Because of Possible Health Risk

Consumers nationwide are being urged to check their refrigerators after Country Eggs LLC voluntarily recalled its large brown cage free “Sunshine Yolks” eggs. Public health officials issued the warning due to a confirmed risk of Salmonella contamination. The recall affects several well known brands and has already been linked to dozens of illnesses across multiple states.

Recall Details from the FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued the recall on August 27, 2025, after identifying a potential Salmonella contamination in eggs produced by Country Eggs LLC of Lucerne Valley, California. The affected products include:

  • Large brown cage free eggs sold under brand names Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho, Nijiya Markets, and bulk packs labeled Country Eggs.
  • Cartons carry the printed code No. CA 7695 and have sell-by dates ranging from July 1 through September 18, 2025.
  • Distribution occurred in grocery stores and food service channels across California and Nevada.

Affected eggs were distributed between June 16 and July 9, 2025. Production at the facility has been suspended while FDA and the company continue the investigation into the contamination’s source.

Sickness Outbreak: Scope and Health Impact

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports at least 95 confirmed cases of Salmonella illness linked to the recalled eggs across 14 states. Symptoms began appearing between January and late July of 2025. A total of 18 patients required hospitalization, though no fatalities have been reported.

California accounted for the majority of cases, with 73 confirmed illnesses. Health officials warned that the contamination could extend to additional states as the investigation continues.

What Consumers Should Do

Individuals who have purchased any of the recalled egg cartons should:

  1. Not consume the eggs.
  2. Discard them immediately or return them to the purchase location for a refund.
  3. Clean and sanitize any surfaces, utensils, or containers that came into contact with the eggs using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of Salmonella infection, such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, or vomiting, should contact a healthcare provider promptly. Particular caution applies to young children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.

Understanding Salmonella Contamination Risks

Salmonella is a common foodborne bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and, in severe cases, systemic infections. Infection typically occurs within 12 to 72 hours after consumption of contaminated food. Symptoms usually resolve in four to seven days without treatment, but vulnerable populations may experience serious complications such as dehydration or arterial infections.

Eggs remain a high risk commodity because bacteria can enter the shell through small cracks or contaminated environments. Cage free eggs may reduce some risks associated with intensive caged systems, but contamination sources such as water, feed, or handling still require strict safety protocols.

Industry Response and Next Steps

Country Eggs LLC responded to the FDA recall by suspending production and working closely with health agencies. A company statement emphasized their commitment to safety, transparency, and corrective action to restore trust. Consumers with concerns can contact the company at 1-800-722-3447 or by email at [email protected].

The FDA continues inspections and sampling in an effort to pinpoint contamination sources and prevent recurrence. The CDC remains engaged in case monitoring and state public health coordination as the investigation evolves.

Broader Implications

This recall highlights the lingering vulnerabilities in the egg production system, even among cage free producers. It also underscores the vital importance of surveillance and traceability in preventing larger outbreaks. For consumers, vigilance about recalls and proper food handling practices remain critical.

Salmonella risk will not vanish until safety is embedded across production, packaging, transport, and retail stages. Meanwhile, checking eggs for codes, dates, and brand labels continues to be the simplest step consumers can take to protect health.

Final Note

Country Eggs LLC’s recall of large brown cage free Sunshine Yolks eggs reflects a serious public health concern. With confirmed Salmonella illnesses affecting nearly a hundred people across 14 states, swift action is essential. Consumers are urged to discard or return affected eggs and to sanitize any surfaces that may have been exposed. As regulatory agencies and the company investigate further, awareness, caution, and proper food safety protocols remain the best defense.
