Dynarex Corporation, based in Montvale, New Jersey, has announced an expanded recall, first announced on September 19, 2024, of specific batches of its dynacare baby powder due to potential contamination with asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that can cause serious health issues, including death.
This article contains information from both the initial September 19th and subsequent expanded recall notices.
Background
Routine testing by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed the presence of asbestos in the affected products.
According to the company, “Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is often found near talc, an ingredient in many cosmetic products. Asbestos, however, is a known carcinogen and its health risks are well-documented. During talc mining, if talc mining sites are not selected carefully or steps taken to purify the talc ore sufficiently, the talc may be contaminated with asbestos.”
An investigation is underway to detemine the cause of the contamination.
Distribution
The affected product was distributed in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennesse, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin. It was also sold online at Amazon.com.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that “has been used in a variety of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire retardant.”
Exposure to asbestos can cause severe, and possibly deadly, health conditions including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.
Commenting on this article, one national food poisoning lawyer said, “These products are often used on babies, some of the most vulnerable members of our society. Any consumer in possession of the affected products should stop use of them right away.”
