The final report on “Second” Good Earth Egg Salmonella Oranienburg Outbreak has been issued.
The FDA issued a Warning Letter to Good Earth Egg Company in February, 2016, and the company remains closed nearly a year later after a second outbreak demonstrates the problem not corrected.

The CDC finally closed the book on its “second” investigation into the Good Earth Egg Salmonella Oranienburg Outbreak on November 9, 2016. The Good Earth Egg company remained closed, by order of Missouri health officials, and is no longer allowed to produce and distribute eggs – the  Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services identified the outbreak strain of Salmonella Oranienburg linking the victims to the Good Earth eggs in 2015 as well, and this is the second close order issued to Good Earth Egg Company.

The State of Missouri’s investigation into 8 new illnesses prompted an October 3, 2016 recall of eggs packaged half, partial, full and multi-dozen egg containers.  All eggs with a sell-by date on or before October 10, 2016 were subject to the recall.  The egg packages were identifiable by the marking “Packed for” or “Produced for” Good Earth Egg Company.

The History of the Good Earth Egg Salmonella Investigation:  52 Illnesses in 2015 followed by 8 New Illnesses in 2016 Food Poisoning Outbreak

In August of 2016, the CDC notified the FDA that it had identified 8 new cases that were linked to the same stain of Salmonella Oranienburg identified at the Good Earth Egg Company facility in 2015 by the FDA – in that outbreak, 52 victims had been confirmed. The 2016 victims had eaten eggs at a local restaurant that, records demonstrate, originated with Good Earth Egg Company.  The genetic strain of the Salmonella in the victims was functionally the same as that found in the Good Earth Egg Company in 2015 and in the victims who had become ill in that outbreak.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, in cooperation with the FDA, then inspected Good Earth Egg Company in September and confirmed that the same strain was present at the facility yet again.   Positive tests of environmental samples at Good Earth Egg Company were a PFGE match to the strain identified in the Good Earth Egg Salmonella 2015 outbreak.

This second close order remains in effect until the source of the problem has been corrected.
