Food Poisoning Outbreak Strikes Wedding Again – this Time in Spain
The importance of properly storing food and keeping it fresh remains a vital issue, one that is continually proven to be so, even today. This is evident in the unfortunate outcome of one wedding in Ulea, Spain on July 6, 2024, where 40 of the 200 guests became ill after consuming the buffet-style served food.
According to reports, the guests started to become ill around midnight on the night of the wedding, exhibiting symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. At approximately 3 a.m., after around half of the affected party drove themselves to the hospital, emergency services were contacted about the outbreak, and at least two ambulances were dispatched to the scene. There, 11 of the guests were treated on-site, while the other 12 drove themselves to the hospital in order to be treated.
Thankfully, of the 40 guests who became ill, none were admitted to the hospital (as of now), and all are reported to be making a relatively quick recovery. Ulea’s mayor, Victor Manuel Lopez, according to EuroWeeklyNews, “noted that this incident is unprecedented in the restaurant’s 20-year history of hosting events.” Nonetheless, it is clear that something made these guests ill, and it is currently being investigated by The Regional Health Ministry through its Food Safety and Zoonosis Service.
An event similar to this one occurred just several months ago, at yet another wedding, in the Ramanagara District in Karnataka, India. On May 5, 2024, 150 guests at a wedding fell ill at a reception in a mall. According to reports, the guests began to fall ill shortly after eating dessert, presenting with symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea. After investigation, it was concluded that spoiled ice cream was the culprit, and those who showed symptoms were taken to the hospital.
Events such as this outbreak only serve to further remind consumers how important it is to keep their perishables properly stored and kept, as if they are not, bacteria is given room to multiply, often leading to spoilage. Furthermore, and in extreme cases such as these, illness, if still consumed.
According to one national food poisoning attorney, “This is a really unfortunate event, one that more than likely resulted from a lack of proper food storage, handling, and cleanliness. It remains incredibly important to utilize proper preventative methods in regard to food preparation, as this will help prevent turning someone’s special dream day into a nightmare.”
