Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are especially susceptible. A Salmonella infection may present quickly within 6 hours or up to 6 days after exposure and may include the following symptoms:
- Gastroenteritis
- Diarrhea, Vomiting, and/or Nausea
- Typhoid Fever
- Pain, Fever, Abdominal Tenderness, Bloody Stools, and Severe Diarrhea
- Bacteremia
- Infections in other parts of the body other than the initial site of contamination
Commenting on this story, one national food safety attorney said, “This recall of black chia seeds is the fifth such incident related to salmonella contamination in the last week alone. However, while incidents of food recalls and warnings may cause temporary disruptions and inconvenience to consumers and retailers, they ultimately serve to protect public health and prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses.”
All consumers should stay informed about food recalls and take necessary precautions to protect their health. For real-time updates on recalls and public health alerts, visit sites like www.foodsafety.gov or Food Poisoning News.
