The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced a public health alert for multiple soup and bowl products due to contamination with wood. Food contaminated with foreign objects, such as wood, has the potential to cause severe harm, including choking, injury, illness, damage to teeth and tongue, or even death.
Background
The alert was issued after FSIS was made aware that an ingredient in the soups, cilantro, had been recalled due to contamination with foreign material.
In the announcement, FSIS said that they anticipate other products could soon be added to the alert.
Distribution
The affected products were distributed to retail outlets and institutions in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.

Consumer and Commercial Action
Consumers and commercial entities should search their homes and businesses to see if they have the impacted products.
As with all food recalls, it is strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected product even if it looks or smells safe to eat or if there are no visible signs of contamination by foreign objects. Foreign material embedded in the recalled products may be too small to be seen by the human eye.
Anyone in possession of the products should not sell, serve, donate, or distribute them.
The impacted products can be returned to the place of purchase or should be thrown away.
Health Risks
The recall notice did not say if there have been any reports of injuries in connection with the consumption of the impacted products.
Any consumer who has been exposed to the affected products, and is experiencing sickness or injury, should contact their medical provider immediately.
Food contaminated with foreign material has the potential to cause severe harm, including choking, injury, illness, damage to teeth, gums, tongue, throat, mouth, stomach, and intestines or even death in most people. Infants, the elderly, and recent surgery patients could also be at extreme risk of serious injury.
Commenting on this article, the nation’s leading food poisoning lawyer said, “There have been a number of recalls and alerts recently because food has been contaminated with foreign material. I advise consumers to regularly check the FDA website and other sources of information to stay on top of food-related advisories.”
