A voluntary recall by Clement Foods Co, based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for Keith Valley brand mustard and Red Boy brand mustard due to Salmonella contamination first issued on December 17, 2024 remains ongoing. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections in animals and humans, especially those in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

The recall was initiated because mustard seeds, an ingredient in the recalled products, tested positive for Salmonella.

This is classified as a Class III recall, meaning that the recalled products are not likely to cause adverse health consequences, however there is still a possibility of it happening.

Distribution

The impacted products were distributed in Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Consumer Action

Consumers and businesses should check their homes and places of business for the recalled products.

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected products even if they look or smell safe to eat.

Anyone in possession of the recalled products is requested to not sell, serve, or distribute them.

Consumers should thoroughly sanitize any surface, utensils, or containers that have come into contact with the impacted products.

The recall notice did not say if the recalled products could be returned for a refund. Otherwise, they should be disposed of and ensure that they are inaccessible to humans, children, pets, and wildlife.

Health Risks

The recall notice did not say if there have been any reported illnesses or injuries in association with the consumption of the recalled products.  However, any consumers who are experiencing symptoms after contact with the affected product should contact their medical provider.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without specific treatment, the infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Commenting on this story, the nation’s leading Salmonella lawyer said, “To minimize the risk of infection I recommend that all consumers follow the recall instructions and dispose of the impacted product properly.”
