A recall first initiated by Puget Consumers Co-op (PCC), based in Seattle, Washington, on September 30, 2024 for Hungarian Mushroom Soup produced by Ladle & Leaf due to potential presence of larvae remains ongoing. Larvae may carry bacteria like salmonella and E. coli or cause intestinal myiasis.
Background
According to Newsweek, the larvae were discovered at a PCC store and that it was “an isolated incident limited to one small batch of mushroom soup.”
PCC has removed the item from store shelves and has alerted customers.
This is classified as a Class II recall, meaning that the recalled product is a potential health hazard but there is a low chance of serious injury or death.

Health Risks
There have been no reports of illness or injuries in connection with consumption of the recalled product. Anyone experiencing an adverse reaction should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
Larvae are young insects that often look different from a mature insect. Consuming larvae contaminated with dangerous pathogens such as salmonella or E. coli can cause illness with symptoms of diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting.
Fly larvae that are ingested can survive in the gastrointestinal tract and cause intestinal myiasis, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach pain, and vomiting.
Commenting on this story, one national food poisoning lawyer said, “It is possible that some consumers could still have this recalled soup at their home. I recommend consumers search their freezers and throw the product away immediately.”
