A recall first initiated by Agri-Mark Inc, based in Waitsfield, Vermont, for Cabot Creamery 8 oz. Extra Creamy Premium Butter Sea Salted due to contamination with elevated levels of coliform bacteria remains ongoing. Presence of coliform bacteria may indicate fecal contamination and can result in serious illness in certain populations.

No press release was issued for this recall and the company has not said how the presence of coliform bacteria was discovered.

The recalled item was distributed to Arkansas, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.

Consumer Action

Consumers should search their homes to see if they have the recalled products.

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected product even if it looks or smells safe to eat.

Anyone in possession of the recalled products should not sell, serve, donate, or distribute them.

The recall notice did not say if the recalled items can be returned to the place of purchase for a refund. Consumers should contact the store of purchase or should throw the contaminated product away.

Health Risks

The recall notice did not say if there have been any reports of injuries or illnesses associated with consumption of the recalled product. Any consumer who has come into contact with the impacted item, and is experiencing sickness or symptoms of food poisoning, should contact their medical provider immediately.

Coliform bacteria are a group of bacteria commonly found in the environment, including soil, vegetation, and the intestines of warm-blooded animals (including humans). While most coliforms are harmless, their presence in food or water often serves as an indicator of potential contamination by fecal matter or other pathogens.

Coliforms themselves are not always dangerous, but their presence signals that harmful pathogens could be present, such as Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio cholerae (cholera), Giardia (parasite), Norovirus, and E. coli.

Commenting on this article, the nation’s leading E. coli lawyer said, “Food contaminated with E. coli and other pathogens can be extremely hazardous. While more details need to be known about this particular coliform contamination I strongly urge consumers to cease use of the recalled product immediately to reduce the risk of any infection.”
