Public Health Alert Issued Regarding Plainville Raw Ground Turkey Products Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

A public health alert, regarding 211,406 pounds of Plainville Brand, LLC, ground turkey products, was issued by the US Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services (USDA-FSIS), on April 10, 2021, in connection with the recent Salmonella Hadar illnesses. The USDA-FSIS says that one person who contracted Salmonella Hadar reported having eaten Plainville Brand ground turkey. A sample taken from an unopened package within the person’s freezer revealed the presence of Salmonella Hadar. Further, epidemiological and traceback methods confirmed that numerous cases of food poisoning illnesses throughout the US, since December 8, 2020 to March 4, 2021, have been caused by the consumption of Plainville Brand ground turkey contaminated with Salmonella Hadar.

As of April 12, 2021, 28 people have been reported with the Salmonella Hadar Outbreak strain in 12 different states: Arizona, Indiana, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The ages of those affected by the outbreak range from 1 to 92 years old. Of the 19 people with available information, there have been two hospitalizations, and no reported deaths due to the Salmonella Hadar Outbreak to date. However, health officials estimate a great many more have been affected by the outbreak, as most people are able to recover from Salmonellosis without medical intervention and therefore, will never report their illness.

The ground turkey products of concern were produced on December 18, 2020 through December 29, 2020 and bear the establishment number EST. P-244 inside the USDA mark of inspection. The list of products under public health alert are the following:

  • 1-lb. packages of Nature’s Promise Free from 94% LEAN | 6% FAT Ground Turkey with Use by/freeze/sell by date of 1/1/21, 1/3/21,1/4/21, 1/8/21 and 1/10/21 on the front of the package.
  • 1-lb. packages of Wegman 94% LEAN | 6% FAT Ground Turkey with Use by/freeze/sell by date of 1/3/21, 1/4/21, 1/8/21 and 1/10/21 on the front of the package.
  • 3-lb. packages of Wegman 94% LEAN | 6% FAT Ground Turkey with Use by/freeze/sell by date of 1/3/21, 1/4/21, 1/8/21 and 1/10/21 on the front of the package.
  • 1-lb. packages of Plainville Farms Ground White Turkey 93% | 7% Fat with Use by/freeze/sell by date of 1/10/21 on the front of the package.

Salmonella Hadar is a particular strain of Salmonella bacteria which causes gastrointestinal illness, typically manifested through symptoms of fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Symptoms usually begin within 6 hours-6 days of infection and last between 4-7 days.

While it is unlikely that consumers still have these products in their freezers, health officials ask, that people exercise particular caution in the handling and preparation of raw meat products at this time.
