A recall has been issued by Big Y Foods, based in Springfield, Massachusetts for some made-to-order subs, wraps, and paninis due to potential Salmonella contamination. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections in animals and humans, especially those in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

The recall was initiated because they have been linked to a nationwide Salmonella outbreak currently under investigation by federal, state, and local health authorities.

Sliced cucumber is an option for customers to add to their sandwiches when ordering.

All sandwiches were products on customer request and were not pre-packaged for self-service.

In response, the company said that all operations at the listed stores were temporarily halted, discarded product on the sandwich line, and then cleaned and sanitized the area.

Distribution

The impacted sandwiches were sold at the following Big Y Foods stores on May 20 and May 21, 2025:

Consumers should check their homes and businesses for the recalled products.

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected products even if they look or smell safe to eat.

Anyone in possession of the recalled products is requested to not sell, serve, or distribute them.

Consumers should thoroughly sanitize any surface, utensils, or containers that have come into contact with the impacted products.

Consumers can return the product or bring a receipt back to the store for a refund. Alternatively, consumers should dispose of the product immediately.

Consumers with additional questions or concerns can contact the company at 800-828-2688, option 7, from Monday through Friday, 7 am to 4 pm.

Health Risks

No illnesses in connection to the consumption of these recalled products have been reported. However, illnesses have been reported across multiple states in connection with a Salmonella outbreak. An outbreak investigation is ongoing.

Any consumers who are experiencing symptoms after contact with the affected product should contact their medical provider.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without specific treatment, the infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
