Salmonella Outbreak Tied to Aladdin Mediterranean Café in San Diego

In April 2025, San Diego County health officials investigated a salmonella outbreak linked to a local restaurant, resulting in at least 14 confirmed illnesses and five hospitalizations. The outbreak highlighted ongoing concerns about food safety in the region.

Outbreak Details

The affected individuals reported dining at Aladdin Mediterranean Café between April 25 and April 26, 2025. Upon notification of the outbreak, the restaurant voluntarily closed to facilitate the investigation by the County’s Environmental Health and Quality Department and Public Health Services. This closure allowed health officials to conduct thorough inspections, collect food samples, and interview staff members. While the exact source of the contamination has yet to be identified, the restaurant will remain closed until health authorities determine there is no ongoing risk to the public.

Public Health Implications

Salmonella is a bacterium that causes an infection known as salmonellosis. Symptoms typically appear 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), abdominal cramps, and fever. Salmonella infections can be particularly severe for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Public Health Response

As of April 28, 2025, San Diego County has reported 184 cases of salmonellosis for the year. This figure is a decrease from the 753 cases reported in 2024 and the 685 cases in 2023. Health officials are urging anyone who dined at Aladdin Mediterranean Café on April 25 or 26 and is experiencing symptoms consistent with salmonellosis to seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, especially for vulnerable populations. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to report their illnesses to the County’s Department of Environmental Health to assist in the ongoing investigation.

Preventive Measures

To reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses, health authorities recommend the following practices:

  • Proper Handwashing: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling food.
  • Safe Food Storage: Keep perishable items refrigerated at appropriate temperatures.
  • Avoid Cross-Contamination: Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw meats and other foods.
  • Cook Foods Thoroughly: Ensure that foods, especially meats, are cooked to safe internal temperatures.

Final Note

The salmonella outbreak linked to Aladdin Mediterranean Café serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent food safety practices in the restaurant industry. As health officials continue their investigation, the community is advised to remain vigilant and report any symptoms of foodborne illness promptly. The proactive closure of the restaurant and the swift response by public health authorities aim to prevent further cases and ensure the safety of the public.
