Moshava California Camp Cut Short by Salmonella

Moshava California overnight camp, located in the San Bernardino mountains, is cutting it’s first session short due to an outbreak of Salmonella.

11 Campers Sickened by Salmonella; All Well on Road to Recovery

A number of youth have fallen ill at a summer camp for girls and boys entering 3rd through 10th grades, according to a recent article published by Jewish Journal. “Recently, a group of 11 campers tested positive for Salmonella,” according to a statement released by Bnei Akiva of Los Angeles. “Thankfully, we have had no new cases since last week, and our affected campers are well on the road to recovery.”

Most individuals with Salmonella infections begin to experience symptoms 12 to 72 hours after first being infected. The illness tends to last between 4 and 7 days, and the majority of individuals recover from the infection without treatment.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramping. Although the majority of illnesses resolve without treatment, in some cases diarrhea may become so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. The elderly, infants, and individuals with already impaired immune systems are more likely to experience a severe case of the illness.

Diagnosing Salmonella requires testing a clinical sample from an infected person to identify the presence of Salmonella bacteria. Once laboratory scientists identify Salmonella in the patient’s sample, it is referred to as “culture-confirmed” and clinical diagnostic labs submit isolates of the bacteria to public health laboratories on the state and territorial level for DNA fingerprinting.

Moshava California Shuffles Schedule; Session II to Continue as Planned

The first session of the camp started on June 27th and was slated to end on July 17th; however, the end-date has been pushed up to this Friday – July 14th – at the instruction of the Department of Environmental Health of San Bernardino County (DEH).

The DEH requested the early ending in order for time to ensure the site is “cleared and cleaned,” according to the statement.

The second session of the camp is set to kick off as scheduled on July 27th in Running Springs, California. “I look forward to a wonderful, safe, healthy and fun continuation of the summer during Session II at Moshava California,” the statement reads.

Activities at the camp include arts, horseback riding and swimming.
