On the 16th of December, 2022, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) shared the voluntary recall announcement of TFP Nutrition’s HEB Texas Pets Indoor Complete Dry Cat Food due to possible Salmonella contamination. There is a two-fold risk: first, there is the threat that Salmonella contamination poses to the cats who consume the HEB Dry Cat Food; then there is the serious threat for the cats’ owners who either handle the TFP Nutrition’s HEB Texas Pets Indoor Complete Dry Cat Food or their sick cat or kitten. Both feline and human illnesses can be serious.
According to a National Food Poisoning Lawyer, Ron Simon, “Salmonella is a type of bacteria that causes salmonellosis, a foodborne illness that can be fatal if left untreated. It is one of the leading causes of foodborne illnesses in the world. Salmonella bacteria are commonly found in foods like poultry, eggs, beef, and dairy products. It is especially dangerous for young children, older adults, or people with compromised immune systems. The symptoms often include diarrhea, fever, vomiting, stomach cramps or pain and bloody stool.”
According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) stated “…Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.”
Cat owners in possession of TFP Nutrition’s HEB Texas Pets Indoor Complete Dry Cat Food, who find themselves experiencing the prior-listed symptoms, are encouraged to promptly contact their personal healthcare provider as well as alert their public health safety officials. They may want to insist on a stool culture to make sure that they are infected with salmonella. A sick cat or kitten may also nee to see the vet – and get tested.
The recalled Cat Food was manufactured in the city of Nacogdoches, Texas, and only distributed in the state of Texas. TFP Nutrition’s HEB Texas Pets Indoor Complete Dry Cat Food was only sold in HEB retail stores, with a code of MFG 13 Nov 22. This can be found on the back of the product bag, on the second line of the Lot Code.
