The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), along with Concord Premium Meats Ltd., based in Saint-Eustache, Quebec, Canada, and Caldic Canada Inc., based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, have announced recalls of food products due to contamination with pieces of wood. Food contaminated with foreign objects, such as wood, has the potential to cause severe harm, including choking, injury, illness, damage to teeth and tongue, or even death.

Concord Premium Meats Ltd. is recalling M&M Food Market-brand Brazilian Style Picanha Steaks and Marc Angelo-brand Carnitas.

Caldic Canada Inc. is recalling SupHerb Farms-brand IQF Cilantro Large.

Background

No information was provided by either company as to how the presence of pieces of wood was found in the respective recalled products.

Distribution

The recalled Concord Premium Meats Ltd. products were distributed nationwide to retail locations across Canada.

The recalled Caldic Canada Inc. product was distributed to hotels, restaurants, and institutions only in the Canadian province of Ontario.

Consumer Action

Consumers should search their homes to see if they have the recalled products.

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected product even if it looks or smells safe to eat or if there are no visible signs of contamination by foreign objects. Foreign material embedded in the recalled products may be too small to be seen by the human eye.

Anyone in possession of the recalled products should not sell, serve, donate, or distribute them.

The recalled products can be returned to the place of purchase for a refund or should be thrown away.

Consumers with additional questions or concerns about the recalled products can contact the CFIA toll-free by phone in Canada and the United States at 800-442-2342 or by email at [email protected].

Health Risks

The recall notice did not say if there have been any reports of injuries in connection with the consumption of the impacted products.

Any consumer who has been exposed to the affected products, and is experiencing sickness or injury, should contact their medical provider immediately.

Food contaminated with foreign material has the potential to cause severe harm, including choking, injury, illness, damage to teeth, gums, tongue, throat, mouth, stomach, and intestines or even death in most people. Infants, the elderly, and recent surgery patients could also be at extreme risk of serious injury.

Commenting on this article, the nation’s leading food poisoning lawyer said, “Food that is contaminated with foreign material like wood has the potential to be extremely dangerous no matter who consumes it. One’s teeth or gums could be severely damaged or the material could become lodged in the stomach. Anyone with these recalled items should stop using them right away.”
