On the 11th of January, 2023, an allergy alert was issued on H-E-B Meal Simple Chocolate Chunk Brownies by Ameripack Foods LLC, due to undeclared allergens. The day of Ameripack’s announcement, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) published Ameripack’s voluntary recall, as the product was reported to be containing undeclared allergens which are Soy and Egg.

Approximately 976 pounds of Ameripack Foods LLC H-E-B Meal Simple Chocolate Chunk Brownies are included in this recall, with the UPC code of 4122077413, and a Use By Date of 01/12/2023. The recall was begun due to the discovery of the Chocolate Chunk Brownies being labeled as a product that does not contain Soy and Egg, Sopapilla Cheesecake.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the symptom of egg allergies “…usually occur a few minutes to a few hours after eating eggs or foods containing eggs. Signs and symptoms range from mild to severe and can include skin rashes, hives, nasal congestion, and vomiting or other digestive problems. Rarely, egg allergy can cause anaphylaxis — a life-threatening reaction.” Similarly, the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI) reported Soy allergy symptoms to be “vomiting, stomach cramps, indigestion, diarrhea, shortness of breath, wheezing, difficulty breathing, repetitive cough, tightness in throat, hoarse voice, weak pulse, pale or blue coloring of the skin, hives, swelling, dizziness and confusion… Rarely, a soy allergy will cause anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction that impairs breathing, causes a sudden drop in blood pressure and can send the body into shock. The only medication that can treat anaphylaxis is epinephrine (adrenaline), administered through an auto-injector as soon as symptoms are apparent.” Individuals with Soy or Egg allergies are strongly advised to avoid H-E-B Meal Simple Chocolate Chunk Brownies at this time, to avoid adverse reactions. Consumers who find themselves experiencing the above-listed symptoms of both Soy and Egg allergies should contact firstly, their personal healthcare provider and then their public health & safety officials.
