According to the Scurry County Health Unit (SCHU) in Snyder, Texas (270 miles West of Dallas and 300 miles North of San Antonio, Texas), here is one confirmed Scury County Hepatitis A Case.  The etiology of the Hepatitis A case is unknown, but it comes from an elderly woman.  The 84 year-old woman believes she acquired the disease from eating at a local restaurant, but so far no SCHU has not released of confirmed that there is any epidemiological evidence linking her illness to a particular establishment.

The announcement was made on the SCHU Facebook page, and provided little detail other than to say that the Scury County Hepatitis A Case was confirmed and that it, at present, appeared to be an isolated case. SCHU also stated, again on its Facebook page: “As of right now, we are considering this an isolated case. We will continue our investigation and keep the public informed if there are any changes. In the meantime, please ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS!”

According to the CDC, state health agencies and the SCHU, Hepatitis A is often identified with excessive fatigue, nausea and vomiting in the early stages, abdominal pain or cramping that can sometimes be isolated on right side of the body where the liver is, white, gray or clay-colored bowel movements, dark yellow or brown urine, a fever, loss of appetite, and jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin).  A routine complete metabolic panel or liver panel will often reveal highly elevated AST, ALT, and bilirubin during the acute phase of the illness.

The onset of Hepatitis A often makes it difficult to find the source, as the consumption of the product usually precedes illness by two to seven weeks, making it difficult to reconstruct victims’ eating habits.  In the acute phase, a person will test positive for Hepatitis A IgM, and thereafter a person will be Hepatitis AB Total positive.  Once a person is infected they will carry the AB antibody for life and cannot be infected again.
