Alfalfa sprouts recalled by River Valley Sprouts for salmonella contamination

Some of the 5-ounce packages of alfalfa sprouts sold by River Valley Sprouts have tested positive for the presence of salmonella. As a result, the company is voluntarily recalling its 5-ounce Alfalfa Sprouts, 4-ounce Alfalfa Sprouts, 5-ounce Garlic/Alfalfa, and 5-ounce Variety sprouts.

The sprout packages being recalled out of food safety concerns were packed and shipped by River Valley Sprouts between March 6 and March 15. The potentially contaminated sprouts were distributed in Minnesota and Wisconsin where consumers would have purchased them in a number of grocery stores. Some of the recalled sprouts, which are packaged in plastic cups or clam containers, are labeled with sell by dates of March 15 to March 25.

River Valley Sprouts has suspended production of its alfalfa sprout products while the investigation continues into the salmonella contamination issues. The company states that every batch of seed is sanitized at 20,000 PPM of calcium hypochlorite and irrigation water is tested for salmonella and E. coli.

No illnesses have yet been reported in connection with the salmonella contaminated alfalfa sprouts. Consumers who have purchased them should not eat them but should either dispose of them properly or return them to the store of purchase.

Food poisoning caused by salmonella can result in serious symptoms, some temporary and some potentially long-term and devastating. Infected individuals typically begin to experience diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps 8 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food.

In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illness such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
