Publix announces salmon recall

A company based in St Petersburg, Florida, has recalled a sockeye salmon product because it may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. The recall of Biltmore Smoked Sockeye Salmon, announced on the Publix corporate website, was initiated by Seven Seas International LLC USA after routine regulatory testing conducted by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services discovered listeria monocytogenes may be present in some of the salmon product.

Although the recall is not detailed on either the Seven Seas International website or the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services website, Publix announced the salmon recall on May 6, 2019. The recall includes Biltmore Salmon products sold at Publix with GTIN #: 007-36211-88774
and a Lot Code/Best By Date: 41 CM/May 23 2019.

Consumers who have Biltmore Smoked Sockeye Salmon in their homes should not eat it, as it may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. The salmon product should be disposed of properly or returned to the store of purchase. Any surfaces that may have come in contact with the potentially contaminated salmon product should be thoroughly cleaned, including refrigerator shelves and kitchen countertops.

No illnesses related to Biltmore Smoked Sockeye Salmon have yet been reported. However, listeriosis is a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in preschool age children, older adults, or people who are immunocompromised. Additionally, it can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that an estimated 1,600 people get listeriosis each year, and about 260 die.
