Tailor Cut Fruit Salmonella Outbreak in Pennsylvania: 33 Salmonella Javiana Cases Confirmed

FDA Announces Outbreak of Salmonella in Pennsylvania likely linked to Tailor Cut Produce Fruit Mix

December 9, 2019, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) publicly announced an ongoing investigation of a Salmonella Javiana outbreak that is currently taking place in Pennsylvania.

Epidemiological and traceback studies have led the FDA and the Pennsylvania Department of Health to believe the outbreak was caused by a Tailor Cut Produce fruit mix from New Brunswick , New Jersey. The fruit mix is called Fruit Luau and includes of cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, and grapes.

On December 7, 2019, Tailor Cut Produce announced a voluntary recall of its cut fruit mix, Fruit Luau, as well as other cut fruit products such as pineapple, cantaloupe, and honeydew.

Unfortunately, these products have already been distributed to schools, caterers, grocery stores, hotels, and other institutions in Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The FDA urges institutions and grocery markets to take special care to ensure these products are not distributed to the public. If you have purchased one of these items, discard or return it to its place of purchase. The recalled products were distributed between November 15, 2019 and December 1, 2019. Pictures of the products’ packaging and labels can be found here.

There have been 33 confirmed cases of Salmonella linked to this outbreak at four healthcare facilities in southeast Pennsylvania. The majority of the cases have been confirmed as Salmonella Javiana. Furthermore, interviews with the patients revealed that the majority of them had consumed Tailor Cut Produce’s Fruit Luau mix before falling ill.

Salmonella Javiana is one of the leading causes of severe Salmonellosis. Salmonellosis can present itself on a ranging scale of mild to severe gastrointestinal illness. Common symptoms of Salmonellosis include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Healthy people generally overcome salmonellosis without treatment, however, it can pose a particular threat to those with weakened immune systems.
