FDA Issues Another Recall on Enoki Mushrooms from Korea for Possible Listeria Concern

On March 9, 2020, Sun Hong Food, Inc., a company based in Montebello, California placed a recall on its Enoki Mushroom products from Korea. On March 23, 2020, Guan’s Mushroom Co of Commerce declared a recall of their Enoki mushrooms imported from Korea for Listeria monocytogene concerns as well. Guan Mushroom Co of Commerce is also a company based in California.

Guan Mushroom Co of Commerce is recalling all its 200g/7.05 oz cases of Enoki Mushrooms imported from Korea. The product is contained in a clear plastic bag labeled “Enoki Mushroom” in English, Korean, and French with the Guan logo on the front of the bag. The product bears the UPC number: 859267007013 and a package code: 14-1, which can be located at the lower right corner of the bag.The Enoki Mushrooms were shipped in white card boxes each containing 25 bundles of 200g Enoki Mushrooms with the Guan’s logo in green and the ID number: 02473. The recalled product has been distributed by the produce supplier to retail and grocery stores across California, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Listeria monocytogenes are a type of bacteria which can cause a potentially harmful gastrointestinal infection known as Listeriosis. Listeriosis typically presents itself within

1 to 4 weeks after the consumption of a contaminated food or drink through flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, stiff neck, and muscle aches. Listeriosis poses a particular threat to the elderly, immunocompromised, and children in utero.

The contamination of Listeria monocytogenes of Enoki Mushrooms was first discovered during a routine food safety testing by the State of California. There have been no reported illnesses connected with the contamination of this product as of to date. The distribution of Enoki Mushrooms has been halted. The FDA asks that anyone in possession of this product return it to its place of purchase or dispose of it immediately. For further information visit the FDA’s website.
