Brote de E. col O103 anunciado oficialmente terminado después de 51 casos reportados.

El brote multiestatal E. coli O103 vinculado a brotes de trébol fue anunciado oficialmente  terminado el 22 de abril de 2020 por los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC). En el informe final de los CDC sobre el brote, se indicó que un total de 51 se vieron afectados en 10 estados, 3 de los cuales requirieron hospitalización. El 16 de marzo de 2020, Chicago Indoor Garden emitió un retiro de todos sus productos que contienen brotes de trébol rojos después de que la Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos (FDA) probara muestras de sus productos, los cuales dieron positivo para E. coli O103. Gracias a la investigación de la FDA, se descubrió que los brotes de trébol servidos en varias ubicaciones de Jimmy Johns también estaban vinculados al brote.

La FDA entrevistó a los afectados por el brote y descubrió que muchos de los casos reportados admitieron haber comido brotes de trébol servidos en diferentes lugares de Jimmy John. Jimmy John anunció oficialmente el 24 de febrero de 2020, que ya no servirían brotes de trébol en sus restaurantes. Esta no es la primera vez que Jimmy Johns está vinculado a un brote, a finales de febrero de 2020, la franquicia de sándwiches recibió una carta de advertencia de la FDA debido a su participación en cinco brotes anteriores. En la Carta de Advertencia, la FDA declaró que los cinco brotes habían sido vinculados a productos adulterados utilizados por Jimmy John en múltiples ocasiones.

En el informe final del brote multiestatal de E.coli O103, la FDA declaró que a través de la secuenciación del genoma completo (WGS) de las bacterias encontradas en los brotes de Chicago Indoor Garden se demostró que coincidía con la cepa del brote actual de E. coli. En la investigación, se descubrió que la cepa también coincidió con la misma cepa que la del brote de E. coli que tuvo lugar en Iowa de noviembre a diciembre de 2019. El brote de E. coli de 2019 fue discutido en la Carta de Advertencia enviada a Jimmy John’s Franchise, LLC.

Los CDC han declarado que todos los productos retirados de Chicago Indoor Garden han pasado la fecha “Mejor por”, pero han aconsejado a los consumidores que pueden haber ingerido cualquiera de los productos retirados que se mantengan atentos a los síntomas de E. coli. Los síntomas de E. coli pueden incluir náuseas, vómitos, calambres abdominales y fiebre. Según Ron Simon, un abogado nacional de E. coli, los síntomas de E. coli a veces pueden convertirse en una complicación potencialmente mortal conocida como síndrome hemolítico-urémico (HUS).
