Another Salmonella-Related Outbreak to Add to the List This Summer: Kader Exports Frozen Cooked Shrimp Recall

On August 11, 2020, Kader Exports pvt. Itd announced a voluntary recall on a variety of their frozen cooked, peeled and deveined shrimp for possible contamination with Salmonella. The recalled products were sold under the brand names of AQUA STAR RESERVE, CENSEA, FRESH MARKET, KIRLAND,TOPS,UNISTAR, and WELLSLEY FARMS. The recalled frozen shrimp varieties were packaged in 1lb, 1.5lb., and 2lb. retail bags and distributed nationwide between February and Mid-May 2020. The complete list of recalled items and their descriptions can be viewed here.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause moderate to severe gastrointestinal illness. Salmonella is spread through the contamination of food or drink by the feces of an already ill animal or person. Some of the most common carriers of Salmonella include fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, eggs, and even processed foods sometimes. Salmonella multiplies in hot conditions, making outbreaks of its kind most common during the summer months.

Just this summer, the U.S. has already experienced a large single-source Salmonella outbreak; The Thomson International Inc. Red Onion Outbreak. The Thomson International Inc. Outbreak led to numerous product recalls across the country, 869 cases of illness, and 116 hospitalizations. Furthermore, the yearly report of Salmonella Outbreaks related to contact with backyard poultry was recorded to exceed the amount, at the same time of the year, in previous years, with a total of 938 confirmed cases, 151 hospitalizations, and one death.

Salmonella spreads easily and can present life-threatening symptoms for people with weakened immune systems. After the FDA found samples of Kader Exports cooked shrimp to be positive for Salmonella, both the company and the FDA issued a recall, in order to prevent an outbreak on the scale of those mentioned above.

If you or someone you know is in possession of any of the recalled Kader Exports frozen shrimp products, they should be discarded or returned to their original place of purchase.
