In cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), California-based Natural Sourcing International has initiated a voluntary recall of one specific lot of Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds due to possible Salmonella contamination. Salmonella is a bacterium, and a leading source of foodborne illness, that can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections in vulnerable populations.

Consumer Action

Fortunately, no illnesses or adverse reactions related to the recalled products have been reported but consumers should check with their healthcare providers if they have any concerns about potential Salmonella exposure and also monitor for any symptoms of infection.
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are especially susceptible. A Salmonella infection may present quickly within 6 hours or up to 6 days after exposure and may include the following symptoms:

- Pain, Fever, Abdominal Tenderness, Bloody Stools, and Severe Diarrhea
- Bacteremia
- Infections in other parts of the body other than the initial site of contamination
Commenting on this story, one national food safety attorney said, “This recall of black chia seeds is the fifth such incident related to salmonella contamination in the last week alone. However, while incidents of food recalls and warnings may cause temporary disruptions and inconvenience to consumers and retailers, they ultimately serve to protect public health and prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses.”
