Newburgh, NY-based Solata Foods LLC has issued a recall for their “Fresh Spinach” products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (“Listeria”). Listeria is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

Routine sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Market Food Inspectors uncovered the contamination. Additional analysis confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

In response to this finding, Solata Foods LLC has suspended production of the affected products.

Product Details

The recall affects multiple sizes of fresh spinach packages distributed to local retail stores. Consumers should look for lot numbers #40606 and #11006, with expiration dates of 6/20/24 and 6/24/24 stamped on the packaging. The full list of recalled products can be seen below:

Consumer Action

Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators for any potentially affected spinach products. If found, these should not be consumed even if they look or smell safe to eat.

Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled spinach items may return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

For further information or concerns, consumers can contact Solata Foods LLC directly at (845) 393-0089.

Health Risks

While no illnesses have been reported to date, the potential health risks are significant. Those who have already eaten the recalled spinach and are experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention promptly.

Listeriosis is an infection that causes fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, and muscle aches and is caused by the consumption of food contaminated by bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.  Unlike other strains of bacteria, listeria multiplies in foods stored in the refrigerator.  Pasteurization and thorough cooking are the most effective methods of killing the bacteria and preventing infection.

Commenting on this story, one national food safety attorney said, “This recall highlights the crucial role of regular inspections and testing in protecting public health.  Consumers should not hesitate to return or discard products that may pose a risk to their health.”
