Food Poisoning Outbreak at Music Festival Leaves Attendees Ill for Weeks

As previously reported by Food Poisoning News last month, The Download Festival, a popular music event held in Castle Donington, Leicestershire, UK, was marred by reports of a widespread food poisoning outbreak affecting hundreds of attendees. However, many festival goers have reported ongoing health issues weeks after the event, according to the Mirror.

Daniel Fitzsimmons, a 27-year-old music fan from Attleborough, Norfolk, shared his harrowing experience. After consuming a pulled pork Yorkshire pudding at the festival, he began experiencing symptoms of food poisoning, including nausea and diarrhea. The illness forced him to leave the three-day event early, missing performances by his favorite band. Almost a month later, Fitzsimmons continues to suffer from gastrointestinal issues, impacting his work as a production engineer.

Another attendee, James Grange, 28, from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, fell ill after eating a lukewarm burger at the festival. Grange’s symptoms were severe enough to warrant contacting the UK’s National Health Service emergency line for advice and leaving the event two days early. Like Fitzsimmons, Grange continues to experience ongoing health issues weeks after the festival.

Both men highlighted poor hygiene conditions at the event, citing overflowing toilets, lack of hand sanitizer, and generally unsanitary conditions. These factors likely exacerbated the spread of illness among attendees.

The scale of the outbreak is alarming, with reports suggesting that over 500 people who attended the festival have been affected by illness. In response to the situation, festival organizers reportedly closed down two food stands, indicating the severity of the problem.

Jatinder Paul, a UK-based specialist public health lawyer representing some of the affected individuals, expressed deep concern over the reports. He emphasized the seriousness of gastric illnesses and their potential for long-term health complications. Paul has called for a thorough investigation into the outbreak and urged other affected attendees to come forward to assist with inquiries.

Live Nation, the event organizer, has confirmed that an investigation into the outbreak is underway. The incident raises important questions about food safety protocols at large-scale events and the need for stringent hygiene measures to protect attendees’ health.

Commenting on this story, one national food safety lawyer said, “To ensure the safety and well-being of festival attendees anywhere, organizers, food vendors, and health agencies must work together.  High food safety standards and proper sanitation facilities must be maintained at all times.”
