Recall of New Age International Enoki Mushrooms Due to Potential Listeria Contamination

New Age International Inc, based in Brooklyn, NY has issued a voluntary recall of its Daily Veggies Enoki Mushroom due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria). Listeria is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

The potential for contamination was detected when samples taken from a store in Baltimore, Maryland, were analyzed by the Maryland Department of Health Laboratories Administration. Testing confirmed the presence of Listeria Monocytogenes in certain 200g packages of Daily Veggies Enoki Mushrooms imported from Korea. All remaining stock in the warehouse has been destroyed.

Distribution

The impacted product was distributed to retail stores across the United States.

Product Details

  • Brand – Daily Veggies
  • Product – Enoki Mushroom
  • Size – 200 grams
  • Packaging – Clear plastic bag
  • UPC Code – 8809159458890
  • Country of Origin – Korea

Consumer Action

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected product even if it looks or smells safe to eat.

Anyone in possession of the recalled product is requested to not sell, serve, or distribute them.

The affected products can be returned to the store for a refund or should be disposed of immediately.

Consumers should thoroughly sanitize any surface or utensils that have come into contact with the recalled products.

Consumers with additional questions or concerns can contact the company at 718-808-1018.

Health Risks

There have been no reported cases of illness or injuries in connection with the consumption of the recalled products.

Listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, is particularly dangerous for certain vulnerable populations. Pregnant individuals, people aged 65 or older, and those with weakened immune systems are at highest risk. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms. In pregnant individuals, listeriosis can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening infections in newborns.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of Listeriosis should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

Food Poisoning News has covered several recalls this year of Enoki Mushrooms due to Listeria contamination, including:

  • Recall of HH Fresh Trading Corp Enoki Mushrooms
  • Recall of Enoki King Mushroom Farm Enoki Mushrooms
  • Meta brand Enoki Mushrooms recalled
  • O’Ya hoo brand Enoki Mushrooms recalled

Commenting on this article, one national Listeria lawyer said, “This year has seen a number of deaths in connection with consumption of Listeria-tainted foods. Any consumer with these recalled mushrooms should stop eating them immediately.”
