August 24, 2026 – One Law Firm, Ron Simon & Associates, Now Represents Over 1200 Victims
The multistate Cyclospora outbreak tied to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico has become one of the largest foodborne illness events in U.S. history. As of the CDC’s most recent update on August 20, the agency has confirmed 10,930 illnesses across 17 states, with at least 454 hospitalizations and two deaths in Michigan. The recalled lettuce is no longer on the market, but new cases are still being added as state health departments work through interviews and laboratory confirmations.
What the CDC Is Reporting Now
The CDC says epidemiologic and traceback data show that iceberg lettuce processed by Taylor Farms de Mexico was contaminated with Cyclospora and made people sick. Illness onset dates now run from June 14 through August 11, 2026, and most of those illnesses began before the July 17 recall.
The case definition has expanded since the outbreak was first announced. Early counts included only people who reported eating at Taco Bell, but the outbreak now covers anyone exposed to Taylor Farms de Mexico iceberg lettuce served or purchased at various locations, including Taco Bell customers.
Genotyping has strengthened the link. According to the CDC, parasites recovered from sick people in this outbreak are genetically related, which is additional evidence that they were infected from the same source.
The agency cautions that the real number of sick people is almost certainly higher than the confirmed count, because some people recover without seeking care and it can take up to six weeks to link a case to an outbreak. State tallies often run higher because they include probable cases. Michigan, the hardest-hit state, reported 14,277 cyclosporiasis cases and 335 hospitalizations among its residents in its latest refresh, a figure that exceeds the national laboratory-confirmed total.
How the Outbreak Unfolded
July 14 – The CDC first announced it was investigating more than 400 Cyclospora infections in Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky.
July 16–17 – The CDC and FDA identified shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell as the source. At that point, 1,644 people who reported eating at Taco Bell had been confirmed ill in five states, with 94 hospitalized. An ingredient-level analysis by Michigan health officials found that 90 percent of interviewed patients had eaten iceberg lettuce. FDA traceback converged on a single supplier, Taylor Farms de Mexico. Taco Bell said it pulled the lettuce from its restaurants nationwide, and Taylor Farms voluntarily recalled all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico.
July 18–20 – The FDA announced that a lettuce sample had tested positive for Cyclospora, then reversed itself, calling the result a false positive. The agency stressed that the retracted test did not change the basis for the investigation or the epidemiological evidence behind the recall. Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas repeated that message at a July 20 press conference.
July 24 – The confirmed count rose to 1,947 across nine states.
August 5 – The CDC broadened the case definition and reported 6,358 illnesses in 15 states, along with the first two deaths, both in Michigan.
August 13 – The count reached 9,481 illnesses in 17 states, with Maine and Massachusetts added.
August 20 – The CDC reported 10,930 illnesses, 454 hospitalizations and two deaths.
Scope of the Recall
The recall reached well beyond Taco Bell. Taylor Farms said the lettuce was shipped to Walmart, Jack in the Box, Sysco and other distributors in 28 states. The FDA’s recall notice covers Marketside-brand Iceberg Salad and Shredded Lettuce sold at Walmart with best-by dates of July 18 through August 3, 2026, along with numerous foodservice products.
Those dates have now passed. The FDA says it remains confident that all recalled lettuce related to this outbreak is off the market, but its investigation is ongoing, and the agency has begun onsite inspections and sampling at iceberg lettuce growers in Mexico in coordination with Mexican authorities.
Taylor Farms’ Response
Taylor Farms has suspended all iceberg lettuce sourcing and production from central Mexico and halted all production at its central Mexico facility as of July 18. The company says it has commissioned independent experts to review food safety protocols at the plant and notes that, according to the FDA, there were no confirmed positive product samples as of August 20.
This is not the company’s first Cyclospora event. In 2013, Taylor Farms de Mexico salad mix served at Olive Garden and Red Lobster was linked to hundreds of Cyclospora illnesses, and the company’s slivered onions were tied to an E. coli outbreak in 2024.
The Fallout for Taco Bell
The commercial impact was immediate. On July 17, Taco Bell foot traffic fell roughly 31 percent below its typical Friday average, the steepest one-day drop among chains tracked by Placer.ai. Industry analysts told CNBC they expect a temporary sales hit lasting one to two quarters rather than lasting damage.
Ron Simon & Associates Now Represents More Than 1,200 Victims
The national food safety law firm Ron Simon & Associates filed the first lawsuit in the country over this outbreak on July 17, on behalf of David Ott, a 27-year Army veteran who was hospitalized in Ohio after eating Taco Supremes from a Youngstown Taco Bell. The suit names Taco Bell Corp., franchisee Charter Foods, Inc., and Taylor Fresh Foods, Inc. as defendants.
The firm’s client roster has grown rapidly alongside the outbreak. Ron Simon & Associates now represents more than 1,200 victims of the Taco Bell and Taylor Farms Cyclospora outbreak, spanning the affected states. Its clients include Southfield, Michigan resident Ella-Salone Jones, a Stage 5 kidney disease patient who was hospitalized for weeks, and Detroit’s Cammal Ogletree, who was admitted to Henry Ford Providence Southfield Hospital for three days after two earlier visits failed to bring her symptoms under control.
Ron Simon, who has recovered more than $850 million for food poisoning victims nationwide, has said Cyclospora does not reach produce by accident; it contaminates crops when they are grown, washed or handled in contact with human or animal waste. The firm has established a Taco Bell Cyclospora Claim Center, reachable at 1-888-335-4901, to evaluate claims from people who became ill after eating at Taco Bell or consuming recalled lettuce.
Ron Simon & Associates is not the only firm in the fray. Within a week of the source announcement, Taco Bell faced at least three lawsuits, a franchisee was named in a separate complaint, and Taylor Farms faced at least four cases. That number has continued to climb as the confirmed case count has grown more than sixfold since then.
What to Know About Cyclosporiasis
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes prolonged, often relapsing watery diarrhea, along with cramping, bloating, nausea, fatigue and weight loss. Symptoms typically appear about a week after exposure and can persist for weeks without treatment. As the Ott case illustrates, the parasite does not show up on a standard ova-and-parasite stool test; a specific Cyclospora screen is required. The infection is treatable with the antibiotic combination trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim).
The FDA advises anyone who ate shredded iceberg lettuce in the two weeks before falling ill to contact a health care provider and report symptoms, and to clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that recalled product touched.
