Nine inmates in Tennessee suffered from Salmonella Heidelberg infections after consuming Tyson Foods mechanically separated chicken in January, according to the final outbreak report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Salmonella Heidelberg has also been linked to Foster Farms chicken in recent years. All nine of the inmates were infected from the same correctional facility, and two were hospitalized due to infections. Tyson Foods recalled 33,840 pounds of the mechanically separated chicken due to the outbreak. A boarding school in Kuala Nerang, Malaysia reported more than 150 students became ill due to a foodborne illness, says national food poisoning lawyer Ron Simon. Seven students at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato Syed Ahmad were admitted to the hospital; two have been discharged and are in stable condition, reports Bernama, the government’s news agency. Kedah state health director Ismail Abu Taat reported the food poisoning was caused by Ayam Masak Merah (chicken in spicy tomato sauce) thought to be contaminated with Salmonella from improperly preserved chicken. According to a national food poisoning lawyer, state and federal health officials are still struggling to make sense of a two-state Listeria outbreak that has left one dead and seven ill. The outbreak caused one death in California and seven illnesses in Maryland. All victims but one required hospitalization. All the victims are Hispanics, two mother-infant pairs and a newborn were among them. Listeria is most dangerous to pregnant women. The source of the contamination came from fresh cheese curd “likely produced” by Delaware-based Roos Foods and repackaged by the Maryland-based Megamart food chain’s store in Virginia. According to a…
