A voluntary recall that was first issued on May 27, 2025 by The Whole Herb Company Inc., based in Sonoma, California, for Celery Seed Whole Organic due to potential Salmonella contamination remains ongoing. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections in animals and humans, especially those in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

No press release was issued for this recall and no information was provided as to who the potential contamination with Salmonella was discovered.

This recall is classified by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) as a class 1 recall, meaning there is a “reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Distribution

The recalled product was distributed in Iowa only.

Consumer Action

Consumers should check their homes and businesses for the recalled products.

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected products even if they look or smell safe to eat.

Anyone in possession of the recalled products is requested to not sell, serve, donate, or distribute them.

Consumers should thoroughly sanitize any surface, utensils, or containers that have come into contact with the impacted products.

Consumers in possession of the product should contact the place of purchase about refunds. Otherwise, recalled foods should be disposed of immediately and safely.

Health Risks

The recall notice for the impacted items did not say if there have been any illnesses or adverse reactions in connection with consumption of the product.

Any consumers who are experiencing symptoms after contact with the affected product should contact their doctor right away, says leading nationwide Salmonella law firm Ron Simon & Associates.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without specific treatment, the infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
