A popular gourmet burger chain in Madrid, Spain, is at the center of a food poisoning outbreak that has affected 17 people, with two individuals hospitalized. The incident occurred at two Hundred Burgers locations in the Spanish capital.
The outbreak, which is suspected to be caused by salmonella, has been linked to a truffle egg yolk sauce served at two of the restaurant’s branches. Customers who dined at these locations on August 4 and 5 reported symptoms including fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, according to Express.
A spokesperson for the region stated that public health services are investigating the incident, focusing on the possibility of “contaminated sauces.” As a precautionary measure, health officials are checking approximately 150 people who may have been exposed to the product during the two-day period.
Hundred Burgers, an award-winning chain that was recently named Spain’s best hamburger restaurant for the second consecutive year, responded swiftly to the outbreak. The company announced on their Instagram account that the affected stores would remain closed until further notice, pending the results of ongoing analyses by health authorities and the restaurant’s own investigations.
In their statement, Hundred Burgers expressed regret for the incident and assured customers that they are cooperating fully with health authorities. The chain has also set up a dedicated phone line for affected customers to monitor their progress and provide support.
One affected diner recounted their experience, stating that they didn’t notice anything unusual while dining but began feeling ill the following day. The customer ultimately sought medical attention at a hospital, where they were diagnosed with food poisoning.
Last year, Food Poisoning News reported on an outbreak of salmonella tied to hamburger ground beef on the East coast of the United States and this past May, featured a story on corruption in Saudi Arabia linked to a food poisoning outbreak at a popular hamburger chain in the country.
Commenting on this story, one national Salmonella lawyer said, “Although this burger chain has enjoyed acclaim for its food, it still highlights the potential risks associated with food preparation and handling, even in well-regarded restaurants. All food service businesses must maintain the highest of standards when it comes to food safety and act quickly when a foodborne incident occurs.”
