Salmonella infected cantaloupe are being taken off the shelves by retailers across the nation as the number of confirmed illnesses, a small fraction of the projected total number of ill persons, hits nearly 100. The actual number of infected could be as high as 1500. The victims are residents of at least 32 states, so far. The cantaloupes implicated include whole, sliced, and pre-chopped versions.

A Cantaloupe Salmonella Lawyers Weighs in:

The unfortunate fact about cantaloupes , according to one national salmonella lawyer:

“cantaloup are very difficult to clean due to the uneven, rough outer layer, and that makes them easy carriers for salmonella, e. coli, and listeria. Once a person cuts the cantaloupe, the blade introduces the salmonella on the outer layer into the soft, edible part of the cantaloupe. A few hours to days later, the poor victim falls ill with salmonellosis.”

When a person contracts salmonellosis, they often suffer severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, elevated temperature, fatigue adn the symptoms of dehydration. in 5 to 6 % of the victims, there will be ongoing irritably bowel disease on the onset of arthritis. These post-infectious disorders can follow an attack on the immune system like salmonellosis. In these cases, the damage can be extensive. Medical treatment, including a stool test early o, is vital to treating salmonellosis.
