Indio, California-based Stutz Packing Company has initiated a voluntary recall of their 1-pound packages of Shelled Walnuts due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (“Listeria”). Listeria is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Background
The potential for Listeria contamination was discovered through routine testing, prompting Stutz to halt production and distribution of the affected walnuts.
The affected products were distributed to food bank warehouses in Texas and Arizona, with potential further distribution to various centers serving consumers, smaller food banks, school lunch programs, shelters, and prison food systems.
The company said it is working with the FDA to investigate the source of the contamination and that “no other sizes, varieties, or other packaging of Shelled Walnuts are included in this recall.” One listeria lawyer, contacted for comment, warns: “Recalls are often expanded, however, based upon new reports of illness or positive test results. I recommend consumers exercise caution with this product, adn pay attention to further updates.”

Health Risks

Listeriosis is an infection that causes fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, and muscle aches and is caused by the consumption of food contaminated by bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Unlike other strains of bacteria, listeria multiplies in foods stored in the refrigerator. Pasteurization and thorough cooking are the most effective methods of killing the bacteria and preventing infection.
Food Poisoning News has recently reported on several recalls and outbreaks linked to Listeria, including an article yesterday on contaminated sliced deli meats.
Commenting on this story, one national Listeria lawyer said, “The recent news of multiple Listeria recalls should not be cause for alarm. It shows that routine testing and regulatory agencies are doing their job in identifying unexpected food contamination and helping to prevent larger infectious outbreaks.”
