Widespread Tomato Recall Issued Across 14 States Due to Salmonella Risk

In early May 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced two significant tomato recalls affecting consumers in 14 states, stemming from potential Salmonella contamination linked to a Florida-based supplier.

Companies Involved in the Recall

Ray & Mascari Inc. initiated a voluntary recall of their 4-count Vine Ripe Tomatoes packaged in 20-ounce plastic clamshell containers. These products were distributed through Gordon Food Service Stores across 11 states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. The affected tomatoes bear the UPC code 7 96553 20062 1 and lot numbers RM250424 15250B or RM250427 15250B.

Williams Farms Repack LLC also issued a recall for tomatoes distributed between April 23 and April 28, 2025, to wholesalers and distributors in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The recalled products include various packaging sizes under the Williams Farms Repack and H&C Farms labels, with lot codes R4467 and R4470.

Source of Contamination

Both recalls trace back to potential contamination at Hanshaw & Capling Farms (also referred to as H&C Farms) located in Immokalee, Florida. The supplier notified Ray & Mascari Inc. and Williams Farms Repack LLC about the possible presence of Salmonella in their facility, prompting the subsequent recalls.

Health Risks Associated with Salmonella

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, appearing 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. In rare cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream, leading to more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

Consumer Guidance

As of now, no illnesses have been reported in connection with these recalls. However, the FDA advises consumers who have purchased the affected tomatoes to:

  • Do not consume the recalled products.
  • Dispose of the tomatoes immediately.
  • Contact the respective companies for further information or to report any illnesses.

For Ray & Mascari Inc. products, consumers can reach out at (317) 637-0234, Monday through Saturday, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.

Preventive Measures and Ongoing Monitoring

The FDA continues to monitor the situation and may provide updates as more information becomes available. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed about food recalls by visiting the FDA’s official website or subscribing to recall alerts.

This incident underscores the importance of stringent food safety protocols and the need for prompt action when potential health risks are identified.
