Once Again DHSH is Investigating Large Texas Cyclospora Outbreak: No Source Yet Identified
There are not at least 160 confirmed Cyclospora victims in Texas this year. Just last year FoodPoisoningNews reported a decline in recent years due to more vigorous inspection and border control. These actions followed large outbreaks linked to cilantro and lettuce form Mexico that sacked many Texas, Ron Simon & Associates took the lead on both the nation-wide lettuce outbreak linked to salads served at Red Lobsters and Olive Gardens locations in numerous states and the Bob’s Taco outbreak in Fort Bend County, Texas.
Cyclospora is a devastating illness, causing horrific abdominal pain, bloating, gas, explosive diarrhea, and often more than 10 pounds of weight loss. It is easily treated with Bactrim, but often goes undiagnosed. It done to show up in a traditional stool culture (meant to identify bacteria like common occurring STEC/E. coli or salmonella) and even a ova and parasite screen can potentially miss it. A specific Cyclospora screen is often necessary.
In the current Texas Cyclospora Outbreak, there are 42 Harris County victims. And while Harris is the most populated, there are another 23 identified victims in Bexar, 10 in Dallas and Travis Counties, 14 in Tarrant County. The Texas DSHS announces new numbers every Tuesday and Friday.
