Burrito Delight salmonella count now at 35
As it continues to investigate the salmonella contamination linked to Burrito Delight restaurants, the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment confirmed that the number of people who have become ill after eating the restaurant’s food has increased to 21.
Most of those illnesses have occurred in Weld County, Colorado. The restaurant has closed both its Fort Lupton and its Dacono locations while the investigation continues.
Twelve people became ill after eating food at a community college event that was catered by Burrito Delight. That number has also increased, as more illnesses are reported and are connected to the salmonella contamination. The restaurant provided meals for two separate events at Aims Community College, on February 6 and 13.
Burrito Delight had been previously cited for not following proper food safety procedures. An inspection conducted shortly after the salmonella contamination was discovered also revealed a number of violations at both restaurant locations.
Of those who have become ill as a result of the salmonella contamination, four have been hospitalized. Some of the food poisoning may have occurred at other private events catered by Burrito Delight. Fourteen people have become ill in Weld County, three in Larimer County, two in Boulder County, one in Morgan County, and one in Adams County.
Salmonella can cause gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Severe symptoms can lead to hospitalization.
