Beef, pork, and poultry salad and wrap items recalled
A public health alert has been issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) for salad and wrap items sold by major grocery stores, including Kroger, Trader Joe’s, and Walgreens. The recalled food products contain beef, pork, and poultry but it is the lettuce that may be contaminated with cyclospora.
Caito Foods, also responsible for the recent multi-state salmonella outbreak tied to recalled pre-cut melon that sickened 77 people in nine states, distributed the potentially contaminated salads and wrap items across the US from its Indianapolis, Indiana, base. Caito received notification from its lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, that the chopped romaine used to manufacture some of their salads and wraps was potentially contaminated.
The recalled salad and wrap items were produced between July 15, 2018, and July 18, 2018, with the either “Best By,” “Enjoy by,” Best if Sold By” or “Sell By” dates ranging from July 18 through July 23, 2018. The products bear establishment number “EST. 39985 or P-39985” inside or next to the USDA mark of inspection.
Although the salads and wrap items are out of date, there is concern that consumers may still have the potentially contaminated food products at home. The cyclospora incubation period ranges from 2 to 14 days, which would include the dates of July 25, 2018, through August 6, 2018.
Symptoms of cyclospora infection include watery diarrhea (sometimes explosive), loss of appetite, bloating, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, low-grade fever, and fatigue. Some cases are without symptoms. Symptoms are more severe in persons with weakened immune systems.
