Cage free eggs recalled – 14 people ill
Cage free eggs distributed to three states in the southeastern US have caused illnesses in fourteen people and have been recalled. Gravel Ridge Farms, based in Cullman, Alabama, recalled the cage free large eggs after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicated they may be contaminated with salmonella.
The recalled eggs date to June 25, 2018. The FDA notified Gravel Ridge Farms of the salmonella potential on September 6, 2018. Cage free large eggs were distributed to restaurants and retail stores in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee between June 25 and September 6.
Gravel Ridge Farms is working with the FDA as well as state and local officials to determine the source of the contamination. All cage free large eggs with the potential of salmonella contamination have been removed from store shelves and the company has ceased production. The recalled eggs include those Gravel Ridge Farms cage free large eggs that are packed in single dozen and 2.5 dozen flats with a UPC of 7-06970-38444-6 and use by dates of 7/25/18 through 10/3/18.
Anyone who has purchased these eggs should not eat them. Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
