One dead, another 16 ill in kosher chicken salmonella outbreak

Raw chicken products eaten by customers of Empire Kosher Poultry, Inc., appear to be responsible for a deadly salmonella outbreak. A total of seventeen people have become ill, eight of which had to be hospitalized for their food poisoning symptoms. One of those who became ill has died from salmonella contamination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that the salmonella outbreak related to raw chicken products produced by New York based Empire Kosher has sickened 17 people in New York (11), Pennsylvania (4), Maryland (1) and Virginia (1) as of August 27. One of the victims in New York died from the food poisoning.

The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert on August 24, out of an abundance of caution due to concerns about salmonella illnesses reported in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic United States that may be associated with raw chicken products. The alert was issued after FSIS was notified about multiple illnesses occurring from September 2017 to June 2018.

Empire Kosher raw chicken products have not been recalled. The CDC is not advising consumers to not eat the chicken; however, if it is consumed, it must be prepared according to food safety guidelines. Precautions should also be taken when handling raw chicken products, including thoroughly washing hands before and after touching the chicken and thoroughly cleaning any surface with which the raw chicken may have come in contact.

If you are a victim of the salmonella outbreak related to Empire Kosher Poultry, Inc., raw chicken products, please contact the food poisoning lawyers at 1-888-335-4901 to learn more about your legal options.
