Another ice cream maker issues recall
Ice cream manufactured in St Petersburg, Florida, is being recalled for potential listeria contamination. Working Cow Homemade Ice Cream, Inc., announced that it is recalling No Sugar Added Vanilla and No Sugar Added Chocolate ice cream that was manufactured during May 2018.
The recalled ice cream was distributed in plastic yellow three-gallon tubs marked with a “born-on” date that refers to the manufacturing date. Working Cow customers include ice cream parlors, independent living facilities, and restaurants throughout the state of Florida. The company is working with 152 retail customers on the recall.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received notification of an illness in Florida and linked that consumer’s listeria contamination to that which was found to be present at the Working Cow manufacturing facility during environmental sampling in 2017.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
In a separate incident, an ice cream maker in Michigan, Reilly Craft Creamery of Detroit, recalled all flavors of its ice cream manufactured since February 2018 because of potential listeria contamination.
Consumers who have purchased ice cream from either of these manufacturers should not eat it but should dispose of it properly or return it to the store of purchase.
